Chapter Eleven

Will had been thinking about tonight all day. As incredible as the previous night had been and as enthusiastic as he was about exploring his newly discovered sex life, Will yearned for more. After a lifetime of solitude, he wanted a friendship—a partnership rather than just a casual hook-up. And he wanted it with Jack. Jack, who made him feel alive and safe and who treated Will as if he was a normal person. It may have been a pipe dream, and he may have been setting himself up for a huge disappointment, but he wanted to try. Now he just had to find out where Jack’s head was and see if he could get him on board. Obviously, Jack was attracted to him, but would Jack want someone like him? Really want a relationship with someone who could barely leave the house? Would he want to be with someone with so much baggage? After all, that’s what Will was after—a real relationship. That’s why he now found himself pacing Jack’s small living room, waiting and struggling desperately not to lose his nerve.

Will tried to convince himself that it was a simple, normal thing to ask a lover out to dinner, but he knew it was anything but for him. For him, it was a giant leap, not least because of the fear of rejection, but he was also committing to going out at night. He wanted to do it though, for himself and for Jack. He had spent a good hour earlier that morning hashing things out with Dr Granger: how he felt, what he needed to do to make the evening successful. He had felt ready, prepared, but as the time drew near for Jack to return, he felt himself losing confidence and his nerves rising.

“You okay?” Mosley asked, pulling Will from his thoughts.

“Good, yes. I’m good, thanks.” Nathan Mosley looked less than convinced about Will’s state of mind. They were roughly the same age, Mosley maybe two or three years younger, and Will thought maybe Mosley could offer him some advice. Gathering his courage, he ploughed on. “Actually, maybe you can give me some advice”—deep breath in—“There’s someone I am interested in, and I’d like to ask them on…on a date.”

“Great. So what’s the problem?”

“I don’t know how?” Will replied honestly.

“Shit… I mean okay. Well, I don’t know how else to say it, but you just ask. You know, like ‘Hey Mindy, would you like to have dinner with me?’ and then Mindy will say yes and off you go. You’ve done it before, right?” The confusion on Mosley’s face was priceless. Obviously, it never occurred to him that someone of Will’s age had never asked anyone out before.

It was Will’s turn to be embarrassed. “Ah, no, actually, never. I’ve never been on a date.”

Mosley’s eyes were so wide Will worried they may actually pop right out of his head. “Hoooly shit. Are you the big V, man?” Mosley commenced pacing, plainly distressed by the news, whatever the hell the big V was.
